The Deming prize, established in December 1950 in honor of W. Edwards Deming, was originally designed to reward Japanese companies for major advances in quality improvement. Over the years it has grown, under the guidance of Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) to where it is now also available to non-Japanese companies, albeit usually operating in Japan, and also to individuals recognized as having made major contributions to the advancement of quality. The awards ceremony is broadcast every year in Japan on national television.Two categories of awards are made annually, the Deming Prize for Individuals and the Deming Application Prize.

The Deming Prize is one of the highest awards on TQM in the world. It is awarded by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE).

TQM is a management concept coined by W. Edwards Deming.  One of the principal aims of TQM is to reduce errors during the manufacturing or service process and  increase customer satisfaction.

This merciless passion has helped us in continuously meeting or exceeding the ever-growing requirements of our customers and this recognition will further enforce our commitment," said Rohit Saboo,NEI chief executive.

NEI is one of the largest domestic bearing manufactures with gross annual turnover of Rs.800 crore in 2009-10, having a market share of 25 percent. The company exports bearings to more than 20 countries.

The Union Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) has awarded the Deming Prize to 4 companies in 2010:

1. Corona Corporation (Japan)
2. Meidoh (Japan) 
3. GC Dental (China)
4.  National Engineering Industries Limited (India)

This is the first time a Chinese company has won a Deming Prize. The parent company, GC Dental (Japan), was awarded the Deming Prize in 2000 and the Japan Quality Medal in 2004.

The 2010 Deming Prize for Individuals went to Dr. Takao Enkawa, Professor, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, Tokyo Institute of Technology. Previous recipients include: Kaoru Ishikawa, Genichi Taguchi, Shoichiro Toyoda, Hitoshi Kume and Noriaki Kano.
